SPG 2018 Status Challenge – Get Platinum or Gold Status

Shortcuts to SPG status have become fewer over the past few years. There was a time you could status match from another program. Another shortcut to status in Asia Pacific was available to World Mastercard holders that could achieve Gold after one stay.

That was then, and this is now.  Over the last few years, SPG have, from time to time, offered a challenge to attain status. SPG have just extended an offer, allowing members to attain Gold or Platinum status without the need to stay the usual number of nights. The current status challenge is valid through to the end of June 2018.

It is also worth noting, that as part of the Marriott-Starwood merger, attaining status in SPG, can also gain you status at Marriott.

SPG Status Challenge

Under the SPG Status Challenge you can opt to earn either Gold or Platinum status by following the Starwood status challenge instructions. The challenge will require you to complete  a set number of nights in 3 consecutive months, as follows:

  • Stay 9 nights and you will be awarded SPG Gold status (ordinarily requires 10 stays or 25 nights per year)
  • Stay 18 nights and you will be awarded SPG Platinum status (ordinarily requires 25 stays or 50 nights per year)

Even better, you get to select the three month period in which you wish to undertake the challenge. There is one small downside though – you only get the status once you have completed the challenge, there is no boost in status for the challenge period.

SPG Status Challenge

Registration is a bit of a manual process, rather than being conducted online. You will find the instructions at the address liked to above.

Basically, you register either by sending an email to or over the phone. You will need to select the three month period in which you wish to undertake the challenge. While award nights do not count, you can retroactively apply for the challenge.

It is worth taking note of the expiry date of status that is granted through the challenge. Basically, you do need to pay attention to the date that you complete the challenge. Due to the way that qualifying years work, you would be best to achieve the requirements after the end of February. As the Terms note

If a member is upgraded via the challenge on or before February 28th, 2018, they retain status until February 28, 2019, the following year. If they are upgraded on or after March 1, 2018, they retain status for the remainder of the year, all of 2019, up until February 28, 2020.

Marriott Status

Once you have earned SPG status, you can then match your status to the same level in the Marriott Rewards program. Do note, however, during the challenge, you do need to stay in SPG Hotels – staying in Marriott hotels won’t work.
