SPG Category Changes 2018

SPG has just announced its latest round of Category Changes. The changes, which come into effect on March 6, affect the number of Starpoints that are required for a Award night.

There don’t appear to be any changes to the number of points for a given category. There are just adjustments to the categories that individual hotels are assigned to.

Given that the changes do not come into effect until next month, it gives a bit of time to consider some options. If a hotel is going up a category, it may well be worth locking in any rooms now. On the other hand, for hotels stepping down, there may some value in holding off until the change.

Categories

First, a note on Categoires. Each hiotel within the SPG network is assigned an Award category. From this, the number of Starpoints required for an award night is deduced.

For a standard room, the number of points required for each category are

Category Weeknights Weekends
1 3,000  2,000
2 4,000  3,000
3 7,000  7,000
4 10,000  10,000
5 12,000-16,000  12,000-16,000
6 20,000-25,000  20,000-25,000
7 30,000-35,000  30,000-35,000

The Changes

All up, there are 276 hotels changing categories. This represents about 17% of their worldwide hotel portfolio. There are slightly more moving up a category, than moving down a category. The breakdown of movements are

  • 145 properties are moving to a higher category
  • 131 properties are moving to a lower category

The vast majority of movements were a single category either or up or down. There were 3 that moved up two categories, 2 that want down two categories, and 1 that went down three categories

The full list of changes has been published by SPG here.

Australia

For those of us in Australia, there are three hotels changing categories. One hotel is going up a level, while two are stepping down a level. Among the movers downward  is the W Hotel in Brisbane, which is interesting for a hotel that hasn’t opened yet.

The three hotels are:

Asia Pacific

More broadly, around Asia Pacific, there are

  • 64 properties are changing category
  • 28 properties are moving to a lower category
  • 36 properties are moving to a higher category.

Excluding the Australian properties, the hotels in Asia Pacific changing Category are:

It is good that SPG have given a months notice of these changes. Have a look through the list and see if any you have your eyes on are on the list. Depending on whether they are moving up or down, you can book now or wait until after the change comes into effect.
