Velocity Suspends Point redemptions

Virgin 737 (By Andrew Thomas from Shrewsbury, UK)

The Velocity Frequent Flyer program has temporarily suspended redemptions in the program. As a result, members will not be able to use their points – for anything.

This follows the news that Virgin Australia has gone into voluntary administration.

Previously, Velocity had restricted the ability to transfer points to Krisflyer. In addition, Velocity had restricted the ability to use points for vouchers. In the end, they were restricting redemptions to just one gift voucher per day.

Velocity Point Redemption Restrictions

Initially, Velocity will be suspending the use of points for four weeks. This may be extended.

The suspension includes all redemption options. That means, in addition to not transferring to Krisflyer, you will not be able to redeem for flights, buy merchandise or obtain gift cards.

Velocity explains it this way:

We know how much our members love to plan their travel and use their Points to redeem flights, however the ongoing travel restrictions and reduced flights have limited the options for them to use Points for flights. We’re seeing more members use Points to shop online for items such as gift cards, electronic goods, and wine. This unexpected demand has made it difficult for our suppliers to provide these offers and limits the availability for all members to redeem their Points.

Existing Points Remain

During the period, any points you have will remain in your account. They won’t be going anywhere or expiring.

Normally Velocity Points expire after 24 months of inactivity. However, this will be extended by the length of the suspension period.

You will still be able to earn points. While it may be difficult to earn by flying, there are still a number of Velocity Partners offering points.

Thoughts

It is unfortunate that Velocity has seen a run on points in the last few weeks. However, it was probably understandable in the circumstances. Fortunately, the program has some protections, so hopefully, they won’t disappear.

I look forward to being able to use them for premium flight awards again.
