American Express offers 30-50% bonus on Hilton and Marriott points transfers

If you’ve been looking at transferring American Express Membership Rewards points across to Hilton Honors or Marriott Bonvoy, August could be a good time.

During August American Express is offering

• 30% bonus points on transfers to Hilton Honors and
• 50% on transfers to Marriott Bonvoy

This bonus is in addition to the current bonus offer when transferring points to the Velocity program.

How does the bonus offer work?

In order to take advantage of the offer, you will need to be enrolled in the American Express Membership Rewards program, where you collect points that you can manually transfer. If that is the case, you can simply log in to your account and make the transfer.

You can do this by

1. Going to the ‘Frequent Traveller Partners’ page
2. Select the Marriott Bonvoy or Hilton Honors program
3. Follow the transfer steps for the program

When you perform that transfer, the standard points will post within the normal timeframes. The additional bonus will be transferred into your account up to 8 weeks later. The following table summarizes the offer:

In the case of Marriott Bonvoy, the effective transfer rate during the promotion works out to be 1:1. For the minimum 600 American Express Membership Rewards points, you would receive 400 Marriott Bonvoy Points and a 200 Point bonus.

For Hilton Honors, the minimum 2,000 Amex Points bonus would transfer initially as 1,000 Hilton Honors Points. An additional 300 Hilton Honors Points would be deposited later.

Thoughts

During August, American Express are running a member month offering various bonus offers. These offers include bonus points on transferring to Hilton or Marriott.

The Marriott Bonvoy bonus seems particularly attractive, given that you can on-transfer the points onto a range of airline programs. In many cases, when transferring to airlines, you can get an additional bonus when you transfer 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points.
