American Express offers Velocity Gold, Platinum status

    MarkBy MarkFebruary 19, 2020No Comments3 Mins Read

If you hold an American Express Platinum Card, Business Platinum Card or Centurion Card, you might be able to enjoy 12 months Gold or Platinum Status. They’re not just going to give this to you – you will need to be transferring some points. OK, maybe even a lot of points.

    What’s the deal?

As reported yesterday, American Express is offering eligible cardholders up to a 20% bonus on transfers to Velocity until the end of February.

For holders of American Express Platinum, Centurion or Business Platinum cards, the deal also includes an offer of Gold or Platinum status. You just need to move enough points across.

Keep in mind that this offer is only available to holders of the relevant cards. If you hold any other card, you are eligible for a transfer bonus, but not a status boost.

    How Many Points?

If you have the eligible cards, you are in line for the bonus, and status boost, as follows:

    • Move up to 399,999 Membership Rewards points across to Velocity and get a 20% bonus Velocity Points.
    • If you transfer 400,000 – 799,999 Membership Rewards points, in addition to the 20% bonus, you’ll also get  Velocity Gold Status
    • And if you manage to move 800,000+ Membership Rewards points across, Velocity will toss in Platinum status.

That’s all you need to do. Have the right cards, and move enough points across. No need to do any of that flying around stuff!

    The Rules

As you’d expect, there are some rules around the promotion.

Firstly, you do not need to make the transfers in one transaction. You just need to transfer the right number of points overall, during the promotion period. That is, between 17 February and 29 February.

Secondly, any boost in status will take place at the end of the promotion period. Presumably, at the end of the promotion, Velocity will check through the transfers to see who gets a boost in status. Basically, that means if you transfer your points today, you will still have to wait until March to see your status boosted.

Of course, that assumes you are getting a status boost. But what if you already hold the status? In this case, you will get a new qualification period, and this will also be from the end of the promotion period.

    Renewing

That will get you status for 12 months. At the end of the 12 months, you will then be assessed as usual. So, if you get bumped to Platinum, you will then need to earn 800 status credits and fly eight eligible sectors in 12 months to keep the status. If you are granted Gold, then you will need 400 status credits and four eligible sectors to retain.

It might not be an offer that appeals to everyone, but for some, it may give a quick shortcut to Velocity status.
