Good news for Uber-loving frequent flyers this week. Once again, Coles is offering 2,000 bonus FlyBuys points for purchasers of Uber gift cards worth $50. To be eligible, you will need to purchase the Uber gift card between May 7 and May 13, 2019.
It’s not so much the Flybuys points – it’s the ability to convert the points to Velocity that interests us. Especially when there is a bonus offer on transfers around. Transferring those 2,000 Flybuys points would normally get you 870 Velocity Points. However, with the current Velocity transfer bonus, the $50 Uber card will convert as 1,000 Velocity Points.
Coles runs this offer quite regularly, although the specifics varies a little. The 2,000 Flybuys points for a $50 gift card is one of the better ones. If you value 2,000 Flybuys points at $10, this represents a 20% return on your purchase.
Or you might just be looking for a present – there are other options, such as a Hoyts, Ticketek, Gourmet Traveller or the Hotel Card Gift Card.
Keep in mind that it is a one off benefit. Each flybuys ‘household’ can only take advantage of the offer once, regardless of how many vouchers you purchase.
If you are using Uber to head to the airport, you could also earn Qantas Points on your Uber trips. This is like a double dip – earning Velocity and Qantas points from the same gift card.
And don’t forget to pay for the Gift Card using a points earning credit card – especially if that card offers a good earn rate at Coles. For example, the David Jones American Express or David Jones American Express Platinum cards can pay out up to 1.5 airline miles for each dollar spent at Coles.
Value of Points
Under its standard conversion rates, flybuys puts a value of $10 on 2,000 points. Which means you are effectively getting a 20% discount on the $50 voucher.
You can also convert flybuys points into Velocity Points. Under this option, 2,000 bonus flybuys points can be converted to 870 Velocity points for use on Virgin Australia. That is the standard transfer rate. Coles and Velocity have had frequent promotions offering bonus points when making transfers. So, it may be worth holding on to the points until a bonus becomes available.
It is always worth keeping an eye on gift voucher promotions from Coles (and indeed Woolworths). Deals such as these could provide you additional points without needing to spend more. In this case, if you are an Uber user, this could be an offer that appeals. And if you’re off to the airport – you could get Velocity and Qantas points out of the deal.
