Qantas Frequent Flyer

Earn Qantas Points for being a Red Energy customer

You can now earn Qantas Points on your energy bills thanks to a new partnership between Qantas Frequent Flyer and Red Energy. Under the deal, energy customers can earn up to 7 Qantas Points per dollar on their bills.

For residents of New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia, the offer is available for gas and electricity. Residents of Queensland are limited to collecting points on electricity.

While Velocity members have had a points earning opportunity with Energy Australia, this is the first time that Qantas has partnered directly with an energy company.

Red Energy Plans

Red Energy are offering Qantas frequent Flyers the choice of two plans:

  • Qantas Red Plus – Earn 7 Qantas Points per dollar
  • Qantas Red – Earn 2 Qantas Points per dollar, and a 10% discount when paying on time

The offer is available to both existing and new customers of Red energy.

New Customer Offer

To take the offer even further, Red Energy are offering new customers (or customers moving house) a sign up bonus. New Electricity Customers are eligible for a 10,000 Qantas Points bonus. In the case of a new Gas customer, an offer of 5,000 Qantas Points is on the table. Customers taking up both an Electricity and Gas account can get a total of 15,000 Qantas Points.

Existing customers that are not moving can link their accounts, but are not eligible for the sign up bonus

Plans Compared

As noted, there are basically two plans available – Qantas Red Plus and Qantas Red. While the rates are the same, you do need to make a choice between Qantas Points and a Discount.

When taking up a Qantas Red Plus plan, you are taking an addition 5 Qantas Points per dollar, but giving up your ‘Pay On Time’ discount of 10%. As a result, you are basically paying 2 cents per Qantas Point. Depending on your usage of Qantas Points this may be worthwhile, but it is getting toward the higher ends of point valuations.

Thoughts

Energy bills are in the news right now, and as always it is worth shopping around for the best deal. While Qantas Points are a good bonus, do your homework to make sure you are getting the best deal.

Remember you can use a points earning credit card to pay your energy bill. This means there are options here that will allow you to ‘double dip’ on the points earning potential.
