Malaysia Airlines is removing the offer of a 15% discount on point requirements when redeeming for a flight booking online. The discount, which has been in place since 2009, is set to be removed as from August 1, 2016. From that date, online bookings will require the redemption of the same number of points as other channels.
The change follows a significant devaluation of the program in February last year. At that time, there were some redemptions that had points requirements almost double. For example, a return Business redemption between Australia and Europe increases from 120,000 Enrich Points to 230,000 Enrich Points. With the online discount, the redemption could be had for 195,500 Enrich Points. As from August, the full 230,000 points will be required.
News of the latest change was sent to members in the July newsletter, and as best as I can tell, has not been published on their website. The did, however, provide a link to a FAQ document.
As per the newsletter:
Greater redemption rewards are coming your way exclusively as an Enrich member! Effective 1 August 2016, our 15% online redemption will no longer be applicable as we have bigger and better rewards especially in store for you. Stay tuned for an even greater and enriching travel and lifestyle experience.
The email does not give away much about what the new ‘bigger and better rewards’ are, although it may be more regular discount offers.
Enrich does have regular discounted redemption options. These include discounts of 30%, 40% and even 50% of specified redemptions. These have typically not been eligible for the 15% discount.
