Krisflyer increasing partner award rates from April 16

Singapore Airlines

Singapore Airlines

Singapore Airlines has published new award charts for Star Alliance partners. The new award charts are coming into effect on April 16.

The Star Alliance partner award rates are used when booking awards on a Star Alliance partner. They also include flights in Singapore Airlines when these are booked together with a partner flight.

These are the second set of changes in two years, with a previous devaluation occurring late in 2017. It also follows recent changes to their own award charts.

The changes have been published on the Krisflyer site.

How the changes affect you

By and large, the changes affect redemptions in the premium cabins the most – in many cases, award levels in Economy have not changes. This is quite similar to the last round of increases, that also affected premium cabins to a greater degree.

Australia – South East Asia

To put some numbers on the changes, let’s consider a couple of scenarios. A redemption today between Australia and South East Asia costs 65,000 for Economy, 132,000 in Business and 180,000 in First.

While the Economy redemption will remain the same, an Award in Business goes up to 148,000 points (an increase of 12%). In a similar fashion, a First Class redemption jumps almost 9%, up to 196,000 points.

Remembering that Business and First both increased 20% in the last round, this brings the increase over to years to around 30%.

Australia – Europe

Between Australia and Europe, again, the changes are in Business and First. Economy remains at 103,000 points for a return journey.  Business sees an increase from  210,000 to 235,000 points (just under a 12% increase). A First Class redemption goes from 296,000 to 326,00o points (about 10%).

Overall, a pretty sad development, but perhaps not unexpected given their own Award rates increased earlier this year.
