Qantas and Malaysia Airlines have strengthened their ties, announcing a new codeshare partnership. Under the new arrangement, Qantas will place its ‘QF’ code on selected Malaysia Airline flights. In addition, Malaysia Airlines will place its ‘MH’ code on selected Qantas flights.
The new codeshare agreement aims to improve the experience for each airlines customers. The codeshares should allow for better connectivity, a more seamless experience and enhanced loyalty benefits.
Codeshares
Qantas will place its ‘QF’ code on the following Malaysia Airlines flights:
- between Kuala Lumpur and major Australian cities – Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney
- between Kuala Lumpur and popular Malaysian destinations such as Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, Langkawi, and Penang.
- Kuala Lumpur to Singapore
For its part, Malaysia Airlines will place its ‘MH’ code on 18 Qantas operated Australian domestic services. This will see the MH code appear on Qantas flights to locations such as Canberra, Darwin, Hobart, and Launceston.
Cam Wallace, CEO Qantas International, said,
As one of our oneworld partners in Asia, we’re pleased to deepen our relationship with Malaysia Airlines, making it easier for Qantas customers to travel to Malaysia while enjoying frequent flyer rewards and premium service. Whether it’s a business meeting in Kuala Lumpur, hiking in Borneo, or a beach escape to Langkawi, Malaysia offers something for everyone, and this partnership makes getting there more seamless than ever. It also reflects our commitment to offering more choice and convenience through an expanding network of partner airlines.
Malaysia Airlines Expansion into Australia
This codeshare announcement comes while Malaysia Airlines prepares for a significant expansion in the Australian market later this year. The expansion will see:
- Brisbane: Malaysia Airlines will resume services to Brisbane on 29 November 2025, with five weekly flights
- Melbourne and Sydney will increase to three flights daily from 30 October and 31 October 2025 respectively.
- Perth will see an increase from 12 to 14 flights a week from 1 December 2025
- Adelaide will move to seven weekly flights from 1 February 2026.
Datuk Captain Izham Ismail, Group Managing Director of Malaysia Aviation Group, said,
Our partnership with Qantas marks an important step forward as we strengthen Malaysia Airlines’ presence in Australia, a key market in our long-term strategy. Australia has long been a core part of our network, and our recent investments – including the deployment of the A330neo, increase in flight frequencies, and the resumption of services to Brisbane – reflect our commitment to meeting growing demand while enhancing our premium offering in this market. This partnership supports our broader strategy for sustainable growth, working alongside our partners to deliver a seamless travel experience that puts our passengers at the centre of everything we do.
Final Words
Qantas and Malaysia Airlines must have sorted their issues out. Earlier this month, we saw an improvement in the way Malaysia Airlines flights post to Qantas Frequent Flyer. And now this.
All that aside, for Qantas customers, it goes some way to plugging the holes that were left with the closure of Jetstar Asia. There is again the ability to book a QF code all the way to various Malaysian destinations.
