Qantas has announced that it will add more seats and frequencies across its Queensland network from March 31, 2019. The increase comes at a time of increased demand for services from both business and leisure travellers.
In addition to increases in the domestic network, Qantas has also announced the restoration of Cairns – Port Moresby flights.
In total, there will be an additional 2,600 seats available each week.
The Changes
Cairns Services
Qantas have recently been operating A330 services to Cairns. This is set to continue with the announcement that Qantas will extend the the use of larger Airbus A330s on selected flights from Cairns to Sydney and Melbourne.
In addition, Qantas will be adding eleven additional return flights each week between Brisbane and Cairns.
Sunshine Coast, Mount Isa and Townsville
There are a variety of changes that affect the Sunshine Coast, Mount Isa and Townsville, where Qantas will be adding additional services.
- Weekday flights between Sydney and Sunshine Coast will increase from daily to double daily. This will bring the total weekly return flights increasing from 8 to 13.
- Weekday flights between Brisbane and Mount Isa to return to a double-daily service. The flights will operated by QantasLink’s 125-seat Boeing 717 aircraft.
- Six additional return flights between Brisbane and Townsville per week.
Qantas Domestic CEO Andrew David said the changes were designed to create more options for the growing number of travellers visiting key destinations in Queensland.
“We’ve responded to feedback from customers, industry and community leaders by adding more flights and offering more choice on the routes where we know customers want to travel,” said Mr David.
Port Morseby
From 31 March 2019, QantasLink will also resume daily flights between Cairns and Port Moresby. The service, to be operated by a 74-seat Bombardier Q400 aircraft, will complement Qantas’ existing services between Brisbane and Port Moresby.
