Qantas will be rolling out the feature to other international routes from next year.
Digital Boarding Pass
In the first step of the roll-out, customers will be able to check-in online via the airline’s website. Smartphone users will be able to access this through the mobile website. The mobile app wll be updated next month allowing members to check-in directly from the App.
The new process is set to offer a more streamlined process for Trans-Tasman customers. . The technology will allow customers to finalise check-in and passport checks online. This will allow customers to skip the check in lines at the airport and head straight through immigration and security.
While Qantas are starting with New Zealand, they expect to roll out the offering across the international network from 2018.
Qantas International and Freight CEO Gareth Evans said the initiative had been on the national carrier’s agenda for a long time.
“Seamless domestic travel has been a reality since Qantas pioneered smart check-in technology in 2010, but the barriers have always been a lot higher for international flights,” Mr Evans said.
“It’s a great example of how industry and Government working together can change what’s possible for travellers. The goal is ultimately to make this technology for international routes the ‘new normal’.
