While Qantas has previously operated flights to both cities from Perth, they have been a bit on and off with them. For example, the seasonal Perth-Auckland flights were last available in 2018.
On the other hand, the last attempt at Perth-Johannesburg flights ended up having confusing terminal arrangements. This came about, in part, due to staffing issues at the Qantas international terminal in Perth.
These issues seem to have now been resolved. In making the announcement, Qantas noted that there was additional funding from the Federal Government to deliver additional border services at the airport.
In announcing the new flights, Cam Wallace, CEO Qantas International, said:
We’re so excited to be launching two new international routes, unlocking more options and greater choice for all Australians to connect to the world through our growing network. By connecting Perth directly with Auckland and Johannesburg, we’re supporting the local economy by opening valuable inbound tourism opportunities for Western Australia, as well as generating new jobs for the state. These routes also enable further growth throughout Australia with connections across our domestic network.
