Rydges Perth to become InterContinental

The current Rydges Perth hotel is set to close late next year, and following a refurbishment will emerge as the Intercontinental. This will mark the return of the IHG brand to Perth after leaving the city previously when the Burswood Resort was absorbed into the Crown empire.

The hotel currently has 240 rooms and is nestled amongst the city’s top business and leisure facilities including the Perth Convention & Exhibition Centre, His Majesty’s Theatre and the city’s King St precinct.

The Rydges has been in Perth in its present form for the last 18 years. The owner has now decided to take it up market.

“We’ve been very focused on trying to re-enter Perth’s five-star market and this opportunity presented six months ago,” Matthew Tripolone, InterContinental’s head of development for Australasia, said.

“The Rydges Hotel owners were looking for a more upscale product than they have and we came to an agreement.”

The project also completes the IHG groups presence in Perth, where it also operates the Holiday Inn Perth and Crown Plaza Perth.

“Long-term we are looking to shave leading products across all market segments – mid-scale, upper mid-scale and luxury brands – in Perth,” Mr Tripolone said.
