The David Jones American Express Card

0

The David Jones American Express Card may not be an obvious choice for frequent flyer. However, a close look at the earning structure shows that it may be a good card for those that have large supermarket bills.

You have the option of keeping your points in the Membership Rewards program, from where you can transfer to a range of airline and hotel programs. Alternatively, you can choose to have the points transferred to your Qantas Frequent Flyer account each month.

American Express are offering a sign-up bonus to 15,000 Membership Rewards Points or 7,500 Qantas Points to new Card Members. To be eligible, you will need to sign up online, be approved, and spend $750 on the Card outside David Jones within the first three months of becoming a Card Member.

Points Earning

You earn points initially in the Membership Rewards program. The following table shows the overall earnings rate for different spend categories

Program
Spend At Membership rewards Qantas Points
Major supermarkets & petrol stations 3 points per dollar 1.5 points per dollar
David Jones 2 points per dollar 1.0 points per dollar
Everywhere Else 1 Point per dollar 0.5 points per dollar

This card shines when it comes to earnings at Supermarkets and Petrol Stations. If you are earning Qantas Points, the 1.5 Points per dollar is among one of the best offers out there.

Frequent Flyer Earn rates

If you collect points in Membership Rewards, and haven’t opted into the Qantas Points option, then you are able to transfer the points to a number of other Airline Loyalty programs. If you have opted into Qantas Points, you will not have this option.

The programs that you can transfer points to are:

  • Virgin Australia Velocity
  • Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer
  • Cathay Pacific Asia Miles
  • Malaysia Airlines Enrich

At present, the transfer rate to each of these programs is 2 Membership Rewards Points to 1 point in the airline program.

The following table shows the effective number of airline points per dollar you will earn when transferring to these programs

Program
Spend At Membership rewards Airline Points
