On February 9, 2020, Qantas will be retiring another 747. This time around, after 17 years of flying, ‘Sydney’ (VH-OEF) will set off on its final journey from Sydney to Los Angeles.
As with the retirement of VH-OJU in October, Qantas is running the service as a Points Plane. As a result, Qantas Frequent Flyers have a good chance to redeem points on the final flight.
VH-OJU is a three-cabin aircraft, featuring Business, Premium Economy and Economy. All three cabins have award seats available.
Flight Details
As mentioned, this will be the final flight for VH-OEF. VH-OEF is a Boeing 747, also bearing the name ‘Sydney’.
At 5 pm on 9 February, flight QF99 will depart Sydney bound for Los Angeles. It will touch down in Los Angeles at 1150 am on 9 February (LA time!).
Redemption Details
As usual with redemptions, you will need to pay a set number of points for the flight. There are also a number of fees, taxes, and charges that need to be paid in actual money.
The redemption rates for the one-way service between Sydney and Los Angeles are
- Economy 41,900 points plus A$232.02
- Premium Economy 81,300 points plus A$349.02
- Business 108,400 points plus A$329.22
Qantas is also offering options for those connecting from other capital cities.
For those connecting from Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra, Hobart or Adelaide to Sydney, it works out to be the same number of points. Having said that, there is a slightly higher case component, due to extra fees and carrier charges.
For those that need to travel from Perth or Darwin, there redemption rates, both in Points and Cash will be higher.
