In this months Velocity news email, I noticed a brief mention of using a BP temporary card in order to ensure that you get points for fuel purchases from BP. In this article, I will take a look at what a BP temporary card is, together with how you actually go about using one.
What is a BP temporary card?
A BP temporary card is card that can be picked up and swiped in-store at BP in order to collect Velocity Points. You would use a BP temporary card if you were making a purcahse at BP, but did not have your card with you. There are two reasons why this may be the case:
- You are a Velocity member, but do not have your card with you
- You are not already a Velocity member
Either way, once you have had a BP temporary card swiped at BP, you will need to register the card on your Velocity account in order to have the points added to your account. For someone that is not currently a member of Velocity, there is an additional step that requires the creation of a Velocity account before the BP temporary card may be registered against it.
How do you register a BP Temporary Card?
Once you have obtained a BP Temporary Card, it will need to be registered against your Velocity account. This needs to be done within 30 days of the initial use if the temporary card, otherwise it will expire.
The first step is to logon to your Velocity account. Once logged on, there are two ways to proceed, both through the menu items on the left hand side of the screen. The first way is to use the ‘My Benefits’ link, and the second is to use the ‘BP Temporary Card’ link.

In the benefits page that comes up, select the BP Temporary Card tab, if it is not already open. This will display a panel that will request details of the BP Temporary Card.
To register the card, simply enter the card number into the BP Temporary Card Number box, and click on Register. Once you have done that, you will see a box showing progress in registering the number, then finally a message indication a successful registration will appear.
After that, the points from the card will be loaded onto your Velocity account. The terms say within three days, but it is often faster.
You can continue to used that Temporary Card for three months from the initial activation (that is, when the card was first swiped at BP)
