With very little fanfare, Velocity Frequent Flyer has rolled out multi-factor authentication on Velocity accounts. This is a welcome, and arguably overdue, change in that it increases the security of members’ accounts.
From today, when you log into your Velocity Frequent Flyer account, on the app or website, you’ll need to enter an additional verification code. As part of the rollout, you will find that you have been logged out of your Velocity account. You will need to go through the log in process to undertake the MFA requirements.
Velocity have set this up so that the codes are being sent to the email address on your profile. There is an option to verify another way which offers the option of sending the code to your mobile phone.
Of course, this all relies on your email address and mobile phone number being up to date. You will need to contact Velocity if this is not the case.
Not just logging in
It is not just in logging in that you will get a prompt for additional verification. You will also need to enter a verification code where you are changing personal details on your account.
Velocity have published a “Help Hub” including a Frequently Asked Question (FAQ) section on their website to address this change. It is worth reading through these if you have any problems.
Thoughts
Given increasing reports of ‘stolen’ points on social media, it is a welcome move by Velocity. Qantas introduced its version of MFA several years ago, and after some initial teething issues it has settled down and an accepted part of the process.
