Velocity returns fire with its own Discover Gold Status Match

Velocity has fired back at a recent status fast track offer from Qantas with its own status match. As with the Qantas offer, you have to earn a certain target of status credits within 90 days to earn status for a year.

Discover Gold for eligible Qantas Frequent Flyers

Velocity is offering Qantas Gold and Platinum members the opportunity to Discover Gold. This is a three month trial of Velocity Gold status, with a challenge to extend it a further year.

In the case of Velocity, it really is an offer to Gold. While Qantas offered selected benefits of Gold, Velocity is giving the trial membership.

To apply for the Discover Gold offer, you will need to hold either a Qantas Gold or Qantas Platinum membership. If you hold an eligible status, you can complete an Expression of Interest through the promotional page.

Once you have been accepted into the Discover Gold promotion, you will have 90 days in which to earn 80 Status Credits. At the end of the 90 days, Velocity will assess your account, and if you have earned the 80 Status Credits, you will have your trial Gold status extended for a further year.

This is not really a new style of offer for Velocity. In the past, they have offered trial memberships to a range of different groups – even FlyBuys members. It is, however, the first time I remember them directly targetting Qantas Frequent Flyer with the offer. (Although they did offer straight out status matches at one point in time).

While the Qantas offer has, by all accounts, been quite successful, you do have to wonder who would be looking at moving the other way. Still, if you have Qantas status, there may be little harm in giving it a go.

And, if you are already Velocity Gold or Platinum, you could take advantage of a separate extension offer.
