Marriott Bonvoy recently announced that they would be extending elite status for an extra year, through to February 2023. They also made several other announcements at the same time – some of which will be permanent changes to the program.

Membership Status

Marriott Bonvoy will be extending the members’ 2021 status through to February 2023. It doesn’t matter when you achieved your status, anytime from 2019 will do. It is good for people that haven’t been able to stay in a Marriott hotel since achieving status.

Other Changes

Points expiration

In other news, Marriott Bonvoy will be placing points expiration on hold until the end of 2022. Remember that points will normally expire after 24 months on no activity on your account. So, you now have until 31 December 2022 to get some activity onto your account.

If you haven’t had any activity in a while, it may be worth making sure you get some account activity by then. If on 31 December 2022 you haven’t had any activity in 2 years, your points may expire.

Free Night Awards extended

If you have a free night award with an expiration between 3 January and 29 June 2022, the expiration date will be extended out to 30 June 2022.  Good for people with a January expiration date, but not quite so generous if your current expiry date is in June.

Suite Night Awards extended

Finally, Marriott will be extending the expiration date on Suite Night Awards. Any award due to expire on 31 December 2021 will be extended to 30 June 2022.

Thoughts

With these announcements, Marriott joins other programs, such as Hilton and Accor that have already announced an extension of status. It makes sense, as for many, 2021 has not seen the return of a lot of travel. Fortunately, 2022 is  looking better, and these extensions give members the chance to take advantage of their status for another year.
