IHG One Rewards uses a tiered elite system that gradually rewards loyal guests across brands such as InterContinental, Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn, Hotel Indigo and Voco. As you move through its five published tiers, each level unlocks increasingly valuable perks, ranging from bonus points to room upgrades and other meaningful on‑property benefits.

To help you navigate the program, this guide walks through every tier, explains how each one is earned and highlights the benefits that matter most (at least in my opinion!).

    Status Overview

IHG elite status delivers valuable perks across the diverse IHG Hotels & Resorts portfolio. Whether you’re staying at family favourites like Holiday Inn, or the more upscale properties such as Hotel Indigo, Crowne Plaza, and InterContinental, elite status ensures you enjoy meaningful benefits throughout your journey. With IHG elite status, you’ll gain access to bonus points, recognition perks, and on‑property advantages at hundreds of hotels worldwide.

How to earn IHG One Rewards status

IHG One Rewards offers two pathways to elite status: elite qualifying nights and elite qualifying points. Understanding both helps you plan your progress strategically.

Earn Status Through Elite Qualifying Nights

You’ll earn one elite qualifying night for every eligible night you stay at an IHG hotel. This includes:

    • Paid stays
    • Points + cash stays
    • Reward nights booked using IHG points

Earn Status Through Elite Qualifying Points

Elite qualifying points are calculated from several sources, making them more complex than standard points. They include:

    • Qualifying stays — Points earned based on the amount your spend on your room. The actual earn varies a bit based on the brand you are staying at
      • 10 elite qualifying points per USD at most IHG brands
      • 5 elite qualifying points per USD at Staybridge Suites and Candlewood Suites
    • Bonus point packages — Purchasing bonus point bundles can accelerate your progress toward elite status.
    • Partner activity — Spend with select partners such as Hertz, OpenTable, and Viator contributes additional elite‑qualifying points.

IHG Elite Status Levels at a Glance

The following table gives a brief overview of the status levels within the IHG One Rewards program. It shows both the requirements for each status, and the benefits that come with each level.

Which Status Level is Right For You?

IHG One Rewards elite status can be highly valuable for frequent travelers, but its true worth depends on your personal travel habits. Entry‑level tiers like Silver Elite offer limited benefits, so they’re generally not worth pursuing on purpose. If you earn it naturally through regular stays, you’ll still enjoy bonus points. At the gold level you may unlock select IHG Milestone Rewards.

The program becomes more rewarding at the Platinum Elite level, where perks such as higher bonus points, room upgrades, and priority check‑in provide meaningful value. Travelers who stay with IHG several times a year may find it worthwhile to join InterContinental Ambassador, which includes complimentary Platinum Elite status plus additional benefits that help justify the annual fee.

For top‑tier perks like daily breakfast at full‑service and select‑service brands, you’ll need Diamond Elite status. This level requires 70 qualifying nights or 120,000 qualifying points per calendar year, a significantly higher threshold compared to many other hotel loyalty programs.

    Milestone Rewards

IHG elite status unlocks a range of valuable perks, yet some of the most meaningful benefits are delivered through a separate Milestone Rewards system. Unlike status benefits, which you can earn through qualifying points, InterContinental Ambassador membership or status matches, Milestone Rewards are only earned through actual nights stayed.

As a result, travelers who reach elite status without staying at IHG properties miss out on this additional layer of rewards. Conversely, those who achieve their status through genuine hotel stays gain access to extra benefits that make continued loyalty even more rewarding.

    Shortcuts to Status

The primary path to elite status is simply staying at IHG hotels. Book eligible rates directly through the IHG website or app to earn qualifying nights and points. Even reward nights redeemed with points count toward your qualifying night total, making them a smart way to progress if you’ve built up a points balance from past stays.

That said, there are a few ways that you may be able to accelerate your status progression in the IHG One Rewards program:

    • InterContinental Ambassador program – As mentioned, if you join the InterContinental Ambassador program, you will automatically receive Platinum elite status.
    • Bonus Points Packages – During the booking process, you may be able to purchase Bonus Points Packages. These are generally available in packages up to 5,000 points per night, and count as Elite Qualifying Points.
    • Promotional Offers – IHG One Rewards may offer promotional offers during the year to help accelerate you toward the next status. These offers often take the form of bonus Elite Qualifying Nights when having an eligible stay.

    Final Words

Deciding which Status Level is right for you depends on your own individual stay patterns, and which benefits you value. For some, that may be Gold, for other, Platinum, or even Diamond may be more desirable. That said, the way Milestone Rewards work may offer other benefits, and we’ll take an updated look at Milestone Rewards in an upcoming article.
