Be aware of scams that target your loyalty accounts

    MarkBy MarkJuly 27, 2023No Comments2 Mins Read

If you’ve been saving up your loyalty points, you’ll understand how valuable they can be. Unfortunately, scammers also realise their value. The result is that you could become the target of scammers.

Recently, the ACCC issued an urgent warning to customers of some of Australia’s largest loyalty reward programs. This comes after the National Anti-Scam Centre received 209 reports of scams targetting the Qantas Frequent Flyer, Telstra and Coles loyalty programs.

The National Anti-Scam centre runs a scamwatch service and received these reports over a four-month period.

While the scam targetted those three programs, the ACCC noted that the scam could affect any loyalty program.

    How does the scam work?

As part of the scam, you’ll receive a text message or email warning you that your loyalty points are about to expire. The message will include links to a fake website, where you are prompted to login. In some case, you will also be prompted to provide your credit card details.

Of course, this is a fake website, and now the scammers have got your information. Once they have this information, they can login to your account. Once there, they can then steal your points and any personal information that may be available.

    What you should do?

If you receive one of these messages, the ACCC offers the following advise:

    • Don’t ever click on a link included in a text message.
    • Access the app or website independently to check on the status of your points.

    Final Words

Unfortunately, scams are all around us, and scammers can easily send thousands of test messages or emails. It pays to be vigilant about what you are receiving, and making sure that the messages are genuine.
