Choice Privileges have launched a new offer to buy points at a discount. There is a form of targetting with these offers, as different accounts get offered various discounts. In my case, the maximum discount for my account in this offer is 25%.
However, others are reporting getting offers of up to 30% discount. In line with many of these promotions, the discount looks to increase as the number of points purchases increases.
The current discount offer is available until 15 March 2026.
Buying Points
Choice Privileges sell points through Points.com. If you are looking to but points, head over to the Choice Privileges landing page on Points.com and enter your details to log on to Points.com.
Keep in mind that these transactions are processed in US Dollars in the US. You may incur some international transaction fees.
Why Buy Points?
The first thing you might wonder is: why buy points at all.
Sure, the obvious answer is to redeem them for Award nights, and that’s a perfectly good reason. But there’s a more strategic angle that often gets overlooked. By stacking Choice Privileges promotions, you can effectively “buy” Qantas Frequent Flyer points, or even pick up Velocity Points at a surprisingly competitive rate.
The catch is timing. To squeeze the best value out of these transfers, you need to wait for one of those coveted double‑points transfer bonuses to Qantas or Velocity. The problem is that these bonuses rarely line up with the discounted or bonus‑point purchase offers. They tend to run at different times, and sometimes there are restrictions on transferring newly purchased points.
So the play becomes: buy points now, then sit tight until a transfer bonus appears. It’s a strategy that goes against the usual advice of never buying points speculatively, so it’s definitely not for everyone, but for the right person, it can unlock some excellent value.
To work this through, at the moment, you can pick up points with a discount. For example, on my offer, I can purchase 40,000 Choice Privilege points for $US309. That converts to about $AU420, given the Australian Dollar is not doing so well at the moment. That makes each point cost 1.05 cents each.
Normally, you can transfer to Qantas or Velocity at a rate of 2,000 Choice Points to 800 Frequent Flyer points. However, during bonus transfer periods you’ll get 1,600 Frequent Flyer points. So, if we wait to transfer those 40,000 points, we could get 32,000 Frequent Flyer Points. At that transfer rate, we would be buying points at 1.53 cents apiece. That is much cheaper than Qantas or Velocity are willing to sell points for.
Final Words
Choice Privileges is offering a discount on points purchases through to 25 August. As with other programs, purchased points can be used for reward nights. So, it may be useful to by points if you are a bit short of a reward.
They also offer a way of buying Qantas or Velocity Points at a reasonable price. This does taking a punt on a points transfer promotion coming up again, so this strategy has some risk attached.
