It has been a week since Rex collapsed into voluntary administration. At the time Rex went into administration there were a few significant immediate changes.
The first of these, and the one that got the most press was the cancelling of 737 services. Secondly, and probably of equal interest to frequent flyers is that the RexFlyer program was put on hold.
Now, the administrators have provided an update on the RexFlyer program, which seemingly brings it half back to life. According to the Sam Freeman, one of the administrators:
Rex Flyers will continue to be able to enjoy the normal benefits you receive under your membership tier.
You’ll also be able to continue to earn Rex Points as usual, including bonus point earn amounts for tiered members.
Having said that, you won’t actually be able to use your points for anything. At least not for the time being.
These points will be redeemable only in the event of a successful restructure of Rex that specifically seeks to maintain these points, and while we can’t guarantee the outcome of this process, it is our current expectation that such a restructure is the likely way forward for Rex.
So basically, you can earn points and take advantage of your benefits, but not use your points.
Much of the RexFlyer program was based around the airline operating 737s. While the Saab 340 fleet remains operational, there are less benefits available to members. So, while there are still benefits, such as lounge access, available, other benefits such as business upgrades are obviously no longer available.
Having said all that, it is worth noting that all traces of RexFlyer appear to have gone from the Rex website. As such, there doesn’t seem to be any way of members managing their accounts.
Fortunately, for most members there would likely only be a small points balance. This is due to the program only launching in October 2023, and there only being a small number of ways to earn points.
Going forward
While the administration process is still underway, it is not clear what the future for Rex and its frequent flyer program is. However, the fact that the Saab 340 fleet is running, and this small update to Rexflyer points to where the administrators think it is all going.
More on this will unfold over the coming weeks.
