Virgin Australia has announced a sweeping overhaul of its airport check‑in process and mobile app experience. Once the changes are fully rolled out, they expect to slash check‑in times by up to 50% and deliver a smoother journey for travellers across 10 major domestic airports.
With nearly 8 in 10 guests already managing their bookings digitally, the airline is doubling down on a mobile‑first strategy designed to streamline every step of the travel experience.
New Virgin Australia App Features
Virgin Australia is rolling out a range of new app features. In many cases, the features were only available through call centres or airport staff. The following features will be available directly through the Virgin Australia app, making premium upgrades more accessible and convenient.
Fly Ahead & Fly Later
In an Australian airline first, eligible Velocity Gold, Platinum, and Platinum Plus members will be able to request same‑day flight changes directly in the app.
- Fly Ahead: Switch to an earlier same‑day domestic flight (eligible members and fares).
- Fly Later: Platinum Plus members can also move to a later same‑day flight.

Fly Earlier (Complimentary)
During peak travel periods or when weather disruptions occur, eligible guests may be offered a free same‑day move to an earlier flight, subject to availability. Notifications will appear directly in the app, so no need to queues or call.
Upgrade Bidding
Travellers can now bid for:
- Business Class
- Economy X (extra legroom)
Domestic Airport Check‑In Experience (Launching May 2026)
Virgin Australia is preparing to roll out a next‑generation check‑in experience. This aim is to move travellers through airports faster and with less hassle.
One‑Step Automated Bag Drop
In an Australian airline first, new bag tag printers will pair with automated bag drop units using advanced camera and barcode technology. Once rolled out, to drop off your bag, you will need to
- Scan your boarding pass
- Print your bag tag
- Drop your bag — no second scan required
Under this new process, Virgin expects to halve current check‑in times, easing congestion during peak periods.
Priority Bag Drop for Frequent Flyers
Velocity Gold, Platinum, and Platinum Plus members, along with Business Class guests, will enjoy a dedicated Priority Bag Drop area at participating airports.
Nationwide Rollout
AT this point, the new bag drop system will appear across a number of major domestic airports. This will see Adelaide, Brisbane, Darwin, Gold Coast, Launceston, Mackay, Melbourne, Perth, Sunshine Coast and Sydney being upgraded over the course of the year.
Airport staff will continue to be available to assist travellers, including those needing accessibility support.
Final Words
This upgrade to processes continues the industry trend toward self‑service, app‑driven travel. With faster check‑in, more flexible flight changes, and easier upgrade options, the airline is positioning itself as a leader in customer‑centric travel technology.
