American Express previously alerted us to Qatar Airways Privilege Club coming on board as a new transfer partner. At the time, they were saying that transfers would kick off in August. Well, it seems as if things have come early, as they are now offering a 20% points bonus when transferring points to Privilege Club.
Offer Details
In order to take advantage of this offer, you will need to transfer points from American Express by 18 August 2023.
Normally, when you transfer points from Membership Awards to Privilege Club Avios, the points convert at a 2:1 rate. For the minimum transfer of 2,000 Membership Rewards points, you would normally receive 1,000 Avios. During the promotion period, you will receive an extra 200 Avios. As such, all up, those 2,000 Membership Rewards points would get you 1,200 Avios into your Privilege Club account.
Example Redemptions
It probably helps to have some examples of redemptions in order to understand whether the offer has value. Consider, for example, a trip from Australia to London. In First Class, you are looking at 135,000 Avios one way. Or, maybe Business is a little more affordable at 90,000 Avios.
Normally, you’d be looking at double those numbers in Membership Rewards to convert to Avios. That means you would need to transfer 270,000 Membership Rewards for a First Class redemption, or 180,000 for a Business Class redemption. Under the bonus offer, these numbers reduce to 225,000 Membership Rewards for First or 150,000 Membership Reward for Business.
