Uber reducing Qantas Points earn on Airport Trips

    MarkBy MarkNovember 21, 2019No Comments2 Mins Read

Qantas Frequent Flyers are able to earn Qantas Points when using Uber services to or from selected airports.

Until now, your Frequent Flyer status determined your earn rate. However, this is about to change. As from 13 December, 2019, all members will receive 1 Qantas Point per dollar.

This will most significantly impact Gold and Platinum members. The earn rate will drop from 3 Qantas Points per dollar down to just 1 Qantas Point per dollar. Silver members will see their earn rate halved, reducing from 2 Qantas Points per dollar to 1 Qantas Point per dollar.

However, it is not all bad news. Uber is currently rolling out Uber Rewards, and Silver, Gold and Platinum members will be able to convert Uber Rewards Points to Qantas Points. Unfortunately, given the exchange rate of 750 Uber Rewards Points to 200 Qantas Points, this may not be an attractive proposition.

    Qantas – Uber partnership

Under the partnership with Uber, Qantas Frequent Flyers can earn points when travelling to or from selected airports. Qantas list the following airports as being eligible

Adelaide, Avalon, Brisbane, Byron Bay, Cairns, Canberra, Gold Coast, Hobart, Maroochydore, Melbourne, Newcastle, Perth, Sydney, Toowoomba, Townsville

In order to book the Uber ride you can use the link provided in the Qantas App. This menu can be found by selecting the Book icon, found at the bottom of the screen.

It may be simpler, however, just to go straight to the Uber App. In any case, it is where you end up making the actual booking.

    Earn Rate

Your earn rate will depend on your Qantas Frequent Flyer status. Generally, the higher your status, the higher the earn rate:

    • Bronze: 1 Qantas Point per dollar spent on eligible airport rides
    • Silver: 2 Qantas Points per dollar spent on eligible airport rides
    • Gold, Platinum, Platinum One: 3 Qantas Points per dollar on eligible airport rides

As from 13 December 2019, all members will receive 1 Qantas Point per dollar.

    Thoughts

Overall, this will see a reduction in Qantas Points earning for Silver, Gold, and Platinum members.
