How does IHG calculate triple points?

It’s worth knowing how IHG actually works out those double or triple points for this promotion. This is especially true if you already have IHG One Rewards elite status.

Basically, IHG is only tripling the base points you earn on qualifying stays. Any bonus points you normally get from elite status don’t get multiplied. As a reminder, for most IHG brands, you earn 10 base points per US dollar. There are exceptions such as Staybridge Suites and Candlewood Suites that give you 5 points per US dollar.

As an example, let’s say you spend $US100 at a Holiday Inn. You would earn 1,000 base points on this spend. In order to make this triple points, IHG One Rewards will give you an extra 2,000 bonus points to make the total up to 3,000 points.

If you have IHG elite status, you’ll still earn your usual bonus points based on your tier. But those extra points don’t give you any advantage in this promo. That’s because IHG calculates both the elite bonus and the promotional bonus strictly from your base points. In other words, elite status doesn’t boost the double or triple points—you only multiply the base earnings.

    Final Words

This is an excellent promotion, even if it was a bit of a surprise. If you haven’t got your stays locked in, now may be the time!
