Marriott Bonvoy’s free night awards just got a little more flexible—especially if you’ve got some extra points lying around. You can now “top up” a certificate with up to 25,000 points, giving you a lot more wiggle room when a hotel is just out of reach.
Prior to this change, you could only add up to 15,000 points to a free night certificate. It helped, but it didn’t always bridge the gap when award prices crept just above the certificate’s limit.
These certificates come in a few different denominations, for example 35,000, 40,000, 50,000 or 85,000. You can earn them through
- Elite status perks. At 75 nights, your Annual Choice Benefit allows you to choose a Free Night Award (up to 40,000 points).
- Special Promotions, which may offer various denominations
They can also be obtained through various credit cards, although this mechanism is not that useful in Australia.
The Top Up
With the new 25,000‑point top‑up option, your certificates stretch much further than before. For example, you can now take that 40K Annual Choice Benefit certificate and redeem it for a 65K‑point property. That’s a big improvement, especially since Marriott blocks you from using a certificate if the award price is even a single point over the limit.
And 40K isn’t the only certificate out there. Marriott issues several different denominations, and each one now has a higher ceiling thanks to the expanded top‑up allowance. The table below shows the new maximum values you can squeeze out of each certificate.
| FNA Certificate Value | Max with 15k Top-up | Max with 25k Top-up |
|---|---|---|
| 35,000 Points | 50,000 Points | 60,000 Points |
| 40,000 Points | 55,000 Points | 65,000 Points |
| 50,000 Points | 65,000 Points | 75,000 Points |
| 85,000 Points | 100,000 Points | 110,000 Points |
Other Rules
Even though the higher top‑up limit is a nice improvement, the basic rules for Free Night Awards haven’t changed. Here’s what still applies:
- Standard rooms only You can only use a Free Night Award on standard rooms. No fa—no premium rooms or fancy upgrades.
- No getting the difference back If your certificate is worth more points than the room costs, the leftover value just disappears. Marriott won’t refund the difference.
- No Stay‑for‑5, Pay‑for‑4 perk Free Night Awards don’t count toward the popular fifth‑night‑free benefit. That deal only works when you’re booking entirely with points.
- Some brands are still off‑limits You can’t use certificates at Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy or on The Ritz‑Carlton Yacht Collection.
- Expiration still matters Your stay has to be completed before the certificate expires. Once it’s expired, that’s it—no extensions.
Final Words
This update is good news for Marriott Bonvoy members, especially if you’ve got Free Night Awards from your Annual Choice Benefit (or anywhere else for that matter). Let’s face it, redemption rates have been increasing so it has become harder to use the certificates.
That said, the other option may have been to increase the denominations of the certificates in line with these increases. Even so, being able to add up to 25,000 points makes it so much easier to book those an aspirational property that used to be so close, yet so far away.
