If you’re flying between Brisbane and Wellington anytime soon, you might just find yourself on Qantas’ shiny new Airbus A220.
Today marks the first time Qantas is sending its next‑generation A220 out on an international scheduled service, and Wellington gets the honour of welcoming it. The aircraft will be taking on the route up to three times a week, bringing along a fresh mix of comfort, efficiency and style that sets it apart from the jets it replaces.

So what’s the big deal about the A220? For starters, it’s noticeably quieter and burns up to 25% less fuel than previous models — great for both the planet and your flying experience. And thanks to its longer range, this aircraft opens the door to new route possibilities as the fleet continues to grow.
This all ties into Qantas’ massive fleet refresh (over 200 new planes on order!), aimed at giving travellers a smoother, more reliable experience. QantasLink has already welcomed its 11th A220, with four more joining the family by mid‑year.
As part of the renewal, QantasLink just added its 11th A220 to its fleet, with four more arriving by mid‑year. Each one comes with the following features:
- 137 seats split across two cabins featuring designs by David Caon
- 10 Business seats in a 2–2 layout
- 127 Economy seats in a 2–3 layout
- The biggest windows of any single‑aisle aircraft, giving the cabin a more spacious feel
- Fast, free Wi‑Fi, so you can stay connected from gate to gate
- Device‑friendly seating with an integrated holder, USB‑A and USB‑C across the whole aircraft, plus wireless charging pads in Business
- A noticeably quieter ride and significantly lower fuel use
QantasLink CEO Mark Dal Pra summed up the excitement around this milestone:
Today is a significant milestone in our fleet renewal program. Feedback from customers about the A220 has been fantastic and we’re really excited for the aircraft to take off on its first scheduled international route.
Brisbane is an important market for us and the A220’s size and economics make it a great fit for many of our trans‑Tasman and Pacific routes.
