Qantas launched the Qantas Marketplace three years ago allowing customers to buy items using points, cash, or a mix of both. Pay with cash and you could earn 3 Qantas Points per dollar. Even better, this rate applied to gift card purchases. Many people took advantage of this by buying gift cards specifically to collect points at that guaranteed rate.
Recently, likely around the beginning of May, Qantas changed this policy, shifting the earn rate to “up to” 3 points per dollar instead of a fixed 3 points. Following this change, many gift cards have had their earning rates cut to 1 point per dollar.
The Changes
For the moment, it looks like gift cards that are mostly affected by this change. If you buy actual products, they still offer 3 points per dollar.
That said, it’s not all gift cards. There are still those offering 3 points per dollar. And even those offering more as a promotional offer,
Some of the cards that offer less than 3 points per dollar (as of today) are
- Harvey Norman – 1 Points per dollar
- AirBnB – 2 Points per dollar
- Woolworths Wish Cards – 1 Points per dollar
- Dan Murphys – 1 Points per dollar
- The Good Guys – 2 Points per dollar
At the moment, there are some cards that are offering 5 Points per dollar (for example, Myer gift cards). As such, I suspect it is still worth popping into the marketplace and checking out the offers from time to time.
Final Words
All good things come to an end, and it looks like this little lurk has now ended. Still, it was good while it lasted.
