Qantas Premier Platinum Credit Card – now with 75,000 point sign up bonus

    MarkBy MarkNovember 1, 2017No Comments3 Mins Read

Qantas have bumped the sign up offer on their Qantas Premier Platinum Credit Card to 75,000 points. This is an increase of 15,000 points over the previous offer, and is valid for those that sign up by January 31, 2018.

At the same time, Qantas has slightly tweaked the name of the card. It is now called the Qantas Premier Platinum Mastercard (they have snuck the Platinum name in)

The card offers an earn rate starting at 1 Qantas Point per dollar, a bonus of Qantas spend, and additional Qantas provided benefits. As with any other cards, the earnings are tiered, with the earn rate falling back to 0.5 points per dollar once reaching the monthly limit.

    Sign up bonus

As with many cards in the market, the Qantas Premier Platinum Card has a sign-up bonus. Available only to new cardholders, the benefits on offer until January 31, 2018 are:

    • 7 0,000 Qantas Points when spending $3,000 in the first 90 dats
    • Reduced annual fee in te first year of $148, increasing to $299 from the second year
    • 15 Month balance transfer at 0% interest

    Earn Rate

The basics of the card points earning are

    • 1 Qantas Point per dollar spent on eligible purchases in Australia, up to $10,000 per statement period.
    • 0.5 Qantas Points per dollar spend on elligible purchases in Australia over $10,000 in a statement perio
    • 1.5 Qantas Points per dollar spent on eligible purchases overseas
    • An additional 1  Qantas Points per $ for eligible transactions with Qantas, (such as  flights or Qantas Club memberships) While other cards offer a similar ebenfit, the Qantas Premier Card offer applies to additional Qantas services, such as Epiqure.

Being a Citi issued cards, there are a range of restrictions on which spend earns points – in particular government spend. This means that payments to the Australian Tax Office, Council Rates, parking fines, and a range of other charges will not earn points.

    Qantas Benefits

Qantas are offering cardholders a range of Qantas benefits, including

    • two complimentary lounge invitations each anniversary year
    • up to 20 percent discount on selected domestic companion fares once a year when booking with the Qantas Premier credit card through the Qantas Premier Concierge.
    • complimentary travel insurance.

    Fees and Charges

The Qantas Premier Platinum card comes with an annual fee of $299, although this is  discounted to $149 in the first year. A card for a supplementary card holder comes at a cost of $50.

While you do earn additiona points for international spend, there is a price to be paid for this. The card will charge a fee of 3% on international transactions.

    Thoughts

A new card on the market is always welcome for the additional competition that it brings. While the card doesn’t set the world on fire with its benefits, it does compare favourably with some other cards.

The initial earnings tier of 1 point per dollar up to $10,000 in a month is set higher than other cards. For example, the ANZ Frequent Flyer Black card offers 1 points per dollar on the first $7,500 per month. Other cards, such as the HSBC drop the earnings rate while a much lower $2,500 per month.

It does come with a significant annual fee, at $299 per year. If you get close to a spend of $10,000 a month, it may be a better choice than some of the other cards on the market. It is definitiely a card woth considering.
